See if they land

Sometimes I want a blank
page to be the open field
I run to make my mark
say I was here

Hurl a handful
of words to the sky
see if they land
into a sentence
or an explosion
duck
duck
duck
period

Jostle them inside my fist
skip them one by one
across the surface
of this blankness
touch touch sink
touch sink
touch sink

Have you held the weight
of a word in your hand
Have you rolled it around
in your mouth like hard candy
Have you sucked until
you let its center disintegrate
on your tongue into your blood
stream to see what kind of high
it gives then what kind of blue after that

Maybe I spend too much time
with each word or maybe you
don’t spend enough

If I hurl a word
If I jostle hold suck it blue
If I stare at a word for too long
it makes its mark on me
I’ve run here enough
to know that much

Currently listening to:
An Echo Shouted from a Mountaintop Years Ago in Another Country

This world is not ours
We own each other
With promises to be free

This word is not ours
We own each other
With promises to be free

This world is not ours
We own each other
With promises to be free

This word is not ours
We own each other
With promises to be free
